Helen Chen Lee, a lyric spinto soprano, graduated from the Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien, Vienna, Austria, specializing in voice and opera performance. Her naturally pleasing voice has won her many scholastic and competition awards including the Music Student Scholarship offered by the Austrian Education Department, winner in the BBC
Radio Station Vocal Auditions in England, winner in the Metropolitan Opera International Competition in New York, etc..
Helen Chen Lee started her professional music career with a recital debut in the New York’s
Carnegie Recital Hall and a subsequent series of opera activities in association with the Metropolitan Opera Studio in New York and the Geneva Opera Centre in Switzerland. She gained such fine critiques as “a virtually flawless, clear focused voice with a beautiful bell-like timbre” (MUSICAL AMERICA), and “an appealing voice, forcefully and has good dynamic control” (THE NEW YORK TIMES).
Helen Chen Lee was active in concert performance in the East and West coasts of The United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, China and Taiwan. She also participated in many international cultural activities such as being an invited performer at the Asian Olympic Games in Beijing and The International Music Festival of Macau. She has also given lectures and master classes in The United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and major cities in China, and been visiting professor of music at The University of Adelaide in Australia. In 2010 she was elected Chairperson of the Sino-Canadian Foundation for Music Education, an organization dedicated to international cultural exchanges and music education promotion. She adjudicated in numerous international vocal competitions in North America and in European countries such as Italy, Russia, Etc. Helen Chen Lee is currently on the faculty of voice of The School of Music at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, and assumes the responsibility of the recruitment of talented students for the UBC Opera Ensemble.
